August 6, 1976: Sports star is home

August 10, 2017

A very. very tired 18-year-old boy arrived home in Shepparton after landing at Tullamarine yesterday morning following the long trans-Pacific flight from North America.

It was John Thorsen, Shepparton's Olympic Games cycling team representative, welcomed home by mother, Mrs Myrtle Thorsen, brothers Gary, Glen and Frank, and sister Denis and father Frank, the two latter just as tired after having also been to the 1976 Games in Montreal.

John caught a sever cold in the last week in Canada with resultant complications causing an eye infection, which the jet lag did nothing to help.

One of his first delights on arrival was the find of his CUB Sherbourne Shepparton Apex Club Goulburn Valley sportsman of the year trophies for winning the award for the third time in pride of place in the family lounge at 21 Clarke St.

But apart from extreme tiredness there's nothing more about John Thorsen's Olympic experience we can tell you.

Australia's Games competitors had to sign a promise that they would not become involved in any publicity at all until one month after their return from Montreal.
