June 11, 1980: Nathan motors into winter

These days an electric car seems to be the answer to rapidly dwindling petrol supplies, especially when industrial disputes threaten the petrol flow through the bowsers.

For three-year-old Nathan Powell the electric car is not only the answer to energy problems but is the greatest billy cart.

Nathan's father, automotive electrician, Mr Ian Powell made the car from a 12 volt battery and a generator.

The frame is a conglomerate of lawnmower wheels and old steel tube.

Winter is not always the best time of the year for kids to drive around on billy carts so Nathan, of Kialla, was armed with an old umbrella before venturing into the driver's seat.
