August 14, 1979: Going nutty

David Earl is literally up to his neck in peanuts.

And, as the expression goes, he will have "had peanuts up to his neck" by the end of the week.

Most other Shepparton, Mooroopna and Tatura Apex Club members will feel the same.

David is the newest member of the Shepparton Apex Club, which cooked nearly five tonnes of peanuts Sunday morning at Home Pride Bakery.

Just for the record, there were about 800 000 individual peanuts.

The peanuts were spread on trays through the bakery's large ovens in a 27 minute cycle.

Apexians were on the assembly line to take the peanuts from the oven, tip them into large bins, scoop them into bags, seal the bags and place them into boxes.

About 7000 bags were filled on Sunday and another 2000 will be filled tonight.

All that is left is to sell the peanuts.

Nearly $2000 will be raised for local charity through the sale of peanuts.

They are available from any Shepparton, Mooroopna or Tatura Apex Club member.
